Datapath Powers LED Video Wall Transformation at Edinburgh Airport

Datapath technology has been central to a major digital signage transformation at Edinburgh Airport, delivering seamless content to some of the most ambitious LED video wall installations in the UK travel sector.

As Scotland’s busiest airport, serving more than 150 destinations with 40 airlines, Edinburgh Airport needed to optimise passenger information, wayfinding and commercial messaging. To meet rising demand and enhance the customer journey, the airport invested in a large-scale digital display strategy across its refurbished check-in and departures areas.

The latest additions included:

  • A 24 metre extension to the existing 85 metre LED video wall
  • State-of-the-art micro LED displays at the check in area
  • A unique floor-to-ceiling curved LED video wall guiding passengers through duty free
  • A new 2.5 metre display providing essential flight information and wayfinding.

“We worked closely with nuVIDEO and teams at the airport, from initial system design to hosting demonstrations and training, assisting with the project expansion as well."

Utilizing Datapath VSN video wall processors, along with VisionSC-UHD2 (4) and VisionSC-HD4+ (10) advanced video capture cards, video sources can be flexibly displayed, while WallControl 10/Pro software ensures ultimate flexibility, control and ease of use.

"We really wanted to provide a more modern and digital experience for our passengers... Providing that on the video wall means it's really easy to see the video wall and where you need to go as you come to check in at the airport."

With the traditional check-in desks at Edinburgh Airport now replaced by a jaw-dropping 109m self-check-in LED display, wayfinding, flight information and marketing are clearly visible from anywhere in the hall.

The huge canvas occupies a position above the baggage carousel that offered limited ceiling height, the digital signage project demanded an LED panel which would be clearly visible from all areas of the check-in hall and could deliver striking visuals from a distance and as close as 2m.

“One of the critical considerations in the design of the new check-in facility was to ensure that flight information, wayfinding and emergency information systems would enable passengers to quickly and safely navigate their route through the check-in hall."

The install of the numerous displays was carried out by specialist integrators nuVIDEO, whose sales manager Michael MacNeil stressed the need for maximum impact: “One of the critical considerations in the design of the new check-in facility was to ensure that flight information, wayfinding and emergency information systems would enable passengers to quickly and safely navigate their route through the check-in hall. This was particularly important given the introduction of multiple new self-service check in systems.”

Adam Marsden, Datapath’s sales and account manager for the UK, said: “I’ve been involved with the Edinburgh Airport projects right from the very start. We work closely with nuVIDEO and teams at the airport, from initial system design to hosting demonstrations and training, assisting with the project expansion as well.

“We hosted several members of the airport team and nuVIDEO  team at our demonstration sites, while members of the airport team also attended in-depth training at our Derby HQ. All of this was done to ensure the correct solution was designed, built, tested and delivered for this project.”

“Our latest VSN video processors are futureproofed... designed to bring control and management to even the largest of LED display canvases”

The airport solutions are Datapath’s powerful and versatile VSN systems. Powerful with proven reliability, they take advantage of Datapath’s high quality video capture, graphics and IPD code cards – purposely designed for 24/7 environments.

Adam continues: “Our latest VSN video processors are futureproofed for most requirements and are purposely designed to bring control and management to even the largest of LED display canvases, regardless of pixel size.”

The result is displays that have streamlined footfall and ease of information, while providing a more efficient  messaging service – allowing the airport to communicate effectively with its customers in a safe and efficient manner.Â
